The
Notebook

What the record says once a tournament closes — who is on an ōzeki run and by how much, who took a gold star, who is one bad basho from losing a rank. All of it worked out from the bouts themselves.

Reading the record…

Where this comes from. Every item on this page is arithmetic over the tournament record — promotion thresholds, three-tournament windows, closing streaks, gold stars. Nothing here is translated or rewritten from another publication. Records via sumo-api.com, covering every bout since 1958. Recomputed three times a day.

Promotion standards in sumo are customary, not codified — thirty-three wins across three tournaments at sanyaku is what the committee has tended to want, not a rule it is bound by. Treat the numbers as the case, not the verdict.
